Social media has influenced every aspect of our lives so it should come as no surprise that it has crept into the divorce courts too. This infographic looks at cheating and the way divorce lawyers use social media to fight their clients’ cases in court.

The fact that people use social media platforms–such as Facebook–to meet and cheat may not surprise many. But, the sheer stupidity of some of the posts is astonishing. If you wouldn’t post your infidelity on the newspaper’s front page, why would you take a risk with social media? Once the information is out there, there no retrieving it.

81% of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers members use information from social media during divorce proceedings. That’s enormous.  If you want to protect yourself during a divorce, it is best to keep personal information and opinions to yourself. Take the tracking service off your phone and don’t fall into the temptation of sharing your fun times.

According to the infographic, one in five people flirt online, but many people may consider online cheating harmless and of no consequence. According to the experts, online cheating or having an emotional affair can have devastating consequences for the couple and the family.

Such affairs lead to secrets and lies, destroying trust. When trust is gone, so too is the relationship. Typically, a married person would only venture into an online affair if the marriage is already in trouble. So, marriage counseling might help to resolve the underlying problems.
