Why We Need To Ensure School Reopenings Promote Equity

Tips to promote equity in school reopening

After a whole year of lockdown due to last year’s Coronavirus outbreak, schools are finally returning to in-person learning. Now that vaccines are finally starting to roll out to at least some parts of the general population, one of the things we’re all wishing for is to finally return to a semblance of normalcy. Of course, for all of us parents out there, nothing beats the idea of sending our kids back to school!

Zoom schooling is not the ideal tool for education, and many of us realized how bad we are at teaching our own kids (and how much, much more teachers deserve a raise)! It’s no wonder why reopening schools has been a priority for so long.

Understandably, many of us are eager to send our kids away from home to be taught by people who actually know how to do their job…and recover some sanity! However, all communities out there need to also consider if their schools are taking the proper measures in order to ensure, not only the health and safety of both teachers and students, but also to make sure that marginalized families are taken care of. We need to make sure that certain communities are not going to be negatively impacted for our rash desire to go back to normal, because normal for you might not be ideal for everyone.
