The two things we’re certain about in life is that we must pay tax and we will die. While most of us are happy to discuss taxes and our dislike of it, humans prefer not to talk of death. This is highlighted by the fact that we use so many different phrases to describe the process. This infographic looks at some of those phrases along with some bizarre statistics about death.
I dug around and found a few more of my own.
- So many people fear spiders but the chances of dying of a spider bite are so slim that you are more likely to be killed by a flying champagne cork.
- People used to believe that the blood of the newly executed was good for their health and would pay executioners to supply it straight from the gallows.
- If you’d like to send your mortal remains into space there is a company called Memorial Space Flights that will send some of your ashes into space for a fee.
- There are about 300 people in America who have had their bodies frozen. They hope for a resurrection when science has progressed sufficiently.
- The remains of around 200 climbers remain where they died on Mount Everest.
- And for those with a phobia of being buried alive, 19th-century innovators invented coffins that had bells, flags, or breathing tubes so that if you woke up you could alert others to the fact.
