Common Myths, Busted

debunking myths you probably heard as a child

When we were kids, we were constantly being told what and what not to do, but not very often given any explanation. A lot of these things make sense, but there are a few commonly known “facts” that are actually not true at all.

If you drop your food on the floor, you have five seconds to pick it up to still be able to eat it, right? The five-second rule is something everyone always heard, but it’s actually not true. In reality, bacteria will get onto the food the very second it hits the floor.

You’ve also probably heard that cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis later. This is another myth that is commonly believed, yet cracking knuckles is actually just bursting air bubbles between joints.

Although many of these were either partly or entirely untrue, some of the things we were told have some truth to them. Chicken soup actually is good if you have a cold, because the steam from the soup can help your sinuses.

It’s always a good idea to double-check things you believe to be fact. If you heard it from an unreliable source, there could be a chance that it is a myth.
