A Terrifying Look At Fair Food Nutrition

Who doesn’t love visiting their local state or county fair during the summer? There are various reasons that fairs are always so packed with people, but one of the most popular is the serious eats that fairs have become famous for.

This infographic, presented by Rasmussen College, gives the numbers behind these indulgent fair creations alongside a photograph. (photographed at the 2013 Orange County Fair in California) And to be quite honest… the numbers are concerning. Obviously this food isn’t going to be healthy for you, but some of the nutrition facts for these items are absurd. The calories themselves are quite hard to look at, but once you take a glance at the amount of sodium that these foods contain your jaw will drop.

To give one example of the ridiculous nutrition facts of each food, I present to you the classic county fair giant turkey leg. The average giant turkey leg sold at fairs contains 633 calories, 28.5 grams of fat, 9.5 grams of saturated fat, 89 grams of protein, and 1,900 milligrams of sodium (your daily intake, and then some!)

With these types of foods, moderation is key. Eating too much of this food is not ideal and can result in complications, especially with these nutrition facts containing the numbers they do.

With that being said, eating these foods every once in a while is surely fine. If you keep consumption of this kind of food to a minimum and don’t overindulge, these foods are quite enjoyable every fair season. Just remember, moderation is key!
