How Women Can Stay Safe While Traveling Alone

safety guide for women who are traveling alone

Traveling comes with a multitude of benefits, whether that be meeting new people, seeing new places and/or learning new things. However, it can be scary to embark on a new place alone – especially as a female.

One of the most important aspects of travel is being mindful of the different cultures you may encounter on your journey. The general guideline for most destinations in Asia is to wear skirts and dresses below the knees and shirts that cover your chest and shoulders.

While Europe is generally more liberal, your shoulders and knees should be hidden if you plan on visiting the Vatican. As you might expect, the same sorts of rules apply to religious areas in Africa, and even more so in the Middle East. In Jordan and Iran, you should plan to cover almost all of your skin. Other places, such as Israel, only require that you wear a long, loose-fitting dress.

Some other basic guidelines you might consider following as a solo traveler are to stay inside once nighttime rolls around, avoid quiet alleyways and try to blend in with the people around you. If you do go out at night, use the buddy system and keep an eye on your drink. As always, be aware of your belongings and your surroundings at all times.

Exploring a new place on your own offers great opportunities for self-discovery, adventure and even new relationships. Traveling alone can seem daunting at first, but it is amazing in the long run.
