The Oldest Businesses in the United States

Oldest Businesses in the United States by state

I visited Seattle last year and took a tour of the city’s underground –– I was seriously impressed at all of the history involved. Since then, I’ve kept an eye out for neat history-related graphics, so I’m excited to share this one with you all.

You likely drive by dozens of businesses on your way to work or school, but some of them may be special. This infographic shows the oldest business in each state. Here’s the interesting thing: Most of these are not household names. For example, the oldest business in Florida is Pensacola Hardware. A quick Google search shows it was founded in 1851.

As a news junkie, I’m pretty pleased to find out that Utah’s oldest business is a newspaper. It’s also pretty impressive how many of these businesses are restaurants and bars––I can’t imagine how much work it is to keep a restaurant operational for over 100 years.

Pick a state and check out its oldest business on this map. You may have found your next road trip destination! The timing is perfect, too. Here’s everything you’ll need as you plan a summer road trip.
