What’s in a White Russian? Your Visual Guide

visual guide to making a white russian

A White Russian might just be the perfect drink. It combines rich flavors, a good amount of alcohol, and a touch of class. Here’s your visual guide to making one.

The White Russian has been around since 1949, but it gained renewed popularity in the early 2000’s with the success of the film The Big Lebowski. The Big Lebowski is a cult classic which features “The Dude” as the main character. He is a nonchalant guy who mainly wears a bath robe and enjoys a White Russian.

What’s in a White Russian?

A classic White Russian requires just three ingredients. Vodka, Kahlua and Heavy cream. The typical recipe calls for one ounce of each ingredient.

How to Make a White Russian

  1. To an empty shaker add 1oz heavy cream, 1oz Kahlua, and 1oz vodka.
  2. Add ice to the shaker.
  3. Shake for ~10 seconds.
  4. Double strain into a chilled old-fashioned glass with fresh ice.

Variations on a White Russian

Over the years there have been a bunch of variations on the White Russian, although I think the original is still the best. Here are some options to try if you’re looking for a twist.

  1. Off-White Russian – Use chocolate milk instead of heavy cream.
  2. Bourbon Milk Punch – Bourbon, milk, simple syrup, and vanilla extract.
  3. Spiced Rum Milk Punch – Rum, milk, simple syrup, and vanilla extract.
  4. White Nun – Vodka, brandy, coffee liqueur and hot coffee.
  5. Ozark Speedball – Use whisky instead of vodka.

With a high sugar content and lots of dairy, White Russians are best consumed in addition to some other drinks. Very rarely do people just drink White Russians all night long…unless you’re The Dude.

If you’ve never tried a White Russian before and are looking something that is very different from your usual mix of cocktails, give this recipe a try.
