Looking At The Many Faces of Sugar

Misleading advertising is a given in today’s day and age. One example is how the word ‘sugar’ is marketed, or in these cases, not marketed.

As you can see in today’s infographic, there is a ridiculous amount of different terms that advertisers use to avoid outright saying ‘sugar’ on labels and packaging.  This infographic in particular shows an incredible 50 alternative terms for sugar! If you’re someone who pays attention to what they eat, you should definitely pay close attention and see what slick terms advertisers use to make their product seem better.

It really is startling how many different terms exist in lieu of the word sugar. Depending on what the product is, the name may change. For instance, in something marketed as more natural, we may see the term ‘organic sugar’ used. Another example is the many different types of “syrup” sugar is marketed as. One of the most absurdly unhealthy sounding terms to me is the term “high fructose corn syrup”, which is something I’m sure we’ve all heard of at least one point in our lives. This term is literally an amalgamation of multiple terms that we have seen to be slick terms to disguise the word sugar.

Overall, this infographic has made me much more mindful of what ingredients are listed on labels, and I’m hoping it can do the same for you.
