Why Mental Health Is More Than A Hashtag

There aren’t many situations in our world where mental health issues are viewed from a light-hearted perspective. Astonishingly one in five U.S. adults experience some form of mental health illness each year, which is why it is important to properly contextualize this daunting number.

There are some vast differences in how those diagnosed with mental health issues in decades past were treated. Today, our culture attempts to better understand and engage those who are mentally or emotionally challenged.

Attempting to fully define what constitutes a broad term like mental health is beyond the scope of this brief commentary. However, it is worth acknowledging that this field of treatment covers a vast spectrum of mental, emotional, and behavioral experiences.

Still, there is a lighter side to this condition. I believe it is tied to the indomitable quality of the human spirit that always attempts to grow and adapt.

Captivating stories such as “Forrest Gump” and “Rain Man” give us an amusing look at characters confined to their peculiar world. Besides that, and with some help along the way, we do okay.

There is a sense of humor in there somewhere. If only the rest of us could share in their lighter moments more often, perhaps our world would be richer for enjoying more of theirs.
