My, How Things Change…Or Maybe Not?

What Could You Buy With A Nickel infographic

Seriously? A girl’s bike for ten dollars? You have got to be kidding me. It’s crazy how things have changed. I mean, what happened? Inflation happened. A consumer society happened. Prices raised higher and higher – all in the interest of capitalism.

Here’s what I find interesting: The lower prices of women and girl’s clothing and accessories. In my opinion, this was a reflection of a society where women were still thought of as lesser citizens – and, as you can see, it didn’t change much through the years. The only exception would be the “silk necktie,” obviously geared explicitly towards men at the time, going for less than women’s dress heels. Yet, even in our extremely inflated society, wouldn’t that still somewhat make sense? Shoes have always been expensive, more or less.

What I wish we still had was a month of rent in a five-room house for ten dollars! Holy crap, I could do that–and I bet many feel the same way! But face it, back then many probably couldn’t afford that. Just like how many people today are working multiple jobs, struggling to make ends meet, and yet still have a hard time affording a nine-hundred dollar rent fee for a small apartment–not including amenities!

Ah, inflation and consumerism. We’re bloody greedy.
