How Self-Driving Cars Will Change Law Enforcement

If you follow the tech or auto industries, you’re likely familiar with self-driving cars and their potential to completely transform the roads around us. For those who aren’t up to speed, here’s a quick refresher.

Everyone from Google to Tesla has gotten in on the race to create fully autonomous cars, and they’re better than human-driven cars in a startling number of ways. A staggering 94 percent of car accidents are the result of human error. Check out  these numbers: Humans have one fatality every 90 million miles, while self-driving cars only have one fatality every 130 million miles.

Something else to consider: self-driving cars make life easier for law enforcement. If everyone used a self-driving car, we could eliminate 56% of traffic stops. From speeding to stop sign violations, driverless cars just don’t make the same mistakes as regular vehicles.

This also means less police interaction and less ticket revenue, since speeding alone accounts for $6 billion in annual fines. Overall, the effects for law enforcement are pretty dramatic.

Regardless of whether your next car ends up being driverless or having a human behind the wheel, there’s a chance it’s still pretty germy. Want to learn more? Find out here.
