Here's the Science Behind #FOMO

If you’re a millennial, you’ve likely heard people complain about #FOMO. Even if you haven’t heard the term, you’re probably familiar with the feeling itself.

FOMO is the fear of missing out, or the anxiety caused by the fear of missing out on a social event or positive experience. The feeling stems from social anxiety and a desire to stay connected to what others are do.

Social networking is one reason you may feel the fear of missing out. As you scroll through Instagram or Facebook, you’ll likely see posts of your friends hanging out––it’s not surprising that it may make you sad.

Competitiveness is another factor behind FOMO. If you want to feel better than the people around you, you’ll likely feel some sadness if you see someone living a more glamorous life.

In today’s world, success is measured by likes and shares. We all try to make ourselves seem perfect on social media, which creates an endless FOMO cycle.

Social media can also cause sleep deprivation, anxiety, and problems with impulse control. FOMO isn’t the only consequence.
