Why You Need To Take More Time Off

Who doesn’t love vacation? Whether it’s exploring some faraway place or staying inside and binge-watching Netflix shows, time off from work is a great way to recuperate and recharge.

There’s only one problem: Americans don’t take as much time off as they should. The U.S. is the only developed country that doesn’t require companies to offer paid time off.

Depressingly enough, 42% of American workers didn’t take any vacation days in 2014. Their reasons vary from fearing work would pile up to not being able to afford unpaid time off.

Employees who have sufficient vacation time are healthier all around. One study found that vacation creates improved happiness, reduced stress, improved mental health and increased productivity.

Whether it’s a lunch break or a long trip away, research shows that time away from work creates more effective employees. If you’re fortunate enough to have vacation days, put them to use. And if you’re searching for a job, a great time off policy shows that a company values its employees.
