Why Bad Habits are Easy to Make & Hard to Break

Habits are formed subconsciously, but must be broken consciously. It’s not an easy thing to do, so here are some tips to help.

Forming habits is second nature to us, and they can actually be helpful. Automatically remembering to lock the front door when you close it is a darn good thing, but when that same subconscious sort of reaction applies to actions with negative consequences, it can be bad news indeed.

Once you notice that you have a bad habit, you can change it even if it’s not easy. Changing your routine can shake you into a frame of mind where those bad habits aren’t so automatic.

When trying to change your habits, consider treating yourself a bit like a dog. That is to say, give yourself lots of little treats when you display the behavior that you want to encourage.

I’m going to start using some of these habit-breaking tips in my own life, but I must say I resent the implication that a morning cup of coffee is a bad habit. Coffee is awesome.
