How to Focus at Work in the Age of Distractions

Here are some solid tips for increasing your ability to focus at work when the entirety of the internet is waiting to distract you.

Look, I’m no Luddite. In fact, I’m… um…  a technophile? Naw that sounds a little kinky. Techno-optimist? No, that sounds like a subgenre of electronic music. I’m whatever the opposite Luddite is. Technology has greatly improved our lives and will continue to do so as long as we don’t mess up too badly. But I do have to admit, it is hard to focus when the spreadsheet you’re looking at is just a click away from the front page of Reddit.

So what do you do? Minimize distractions. Silence your cell phone, log out of chat clients that aren’t specifically for work, set up email filters. It makes me sad, but taking things off the walls that you tend to space out while looking at is a good idea. Not that you can’t space out at a perfectly blank wall, but at least it doesn’t draw and capture your attention.
