FIFA Women's World Cup Infographic

I still get a warm glow when I think back on the USA’s victory over Japan in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final.

The men’s first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930, but the first Women’s World Cup wasn’t until 1991, 25 years ago. The tournament is held every four years, so there have been seven so far. The US won for the third time in 2015 which means that they are absolutely crushing it, to use the technical term. Germany is in close second with two World Cup wins, and consecutive ones at that.

As the above infographic informs us, the tournament has seen a lot of growth since its debut, with double the number of teams participating today than when the Cup was first held. I call that a good result, and as the largest women’s sporting event in the world, it will undoubtedly continue to grow apace.

Step a little further back in FIFA history and explore this infographic on the 2014 Men’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Did you know the official football was named The Brazuca?
