Flowers and What They Symbolize

In the words of Demetri Martin, a popular, slightly offbeat comedian, “Buying someone flowers is kind of a weird idea. Like: Hey, these are for you, now watch them slowly die, because I love you.”

He may have a point, but despite Martin’s insight, I’m convinced that there’s something wonderful about having fresh flowers around the house or in your garden. Today’s infographic gives us a chance to explore different kinds of flowers and what they traditionally represent. My boyfriend teases me about wearing too many floral prints, but I like having these beautiful natural masterpieces surrounding me every day. They provide a sense of comfort and relief, and a touch of sadness when they start to wilt.

Growing up, I remember taking trips to Washington (state) and sitting on my grandmother’s deck, admiring her beautiful blue Hydrangeas. To this day, every time I see Hydrangeas I can’t help but feel sentimental. And today’s infographic informs us that these beautiful flowers originated in Japan and imply sincerity.

Living with a bit of a plant geek has also increased my appreciation for plants and flowers. I recently moved into a new apartment, and the first day I moved in my new roommate Leah added “plants” to her grocery list and came back with a Money Tree, Cast Iron Plant, and some Sunflowers–which apparently represent longevity, and initiate feelings of pure thoughts. I laughed at her at first, but I soon realized how much the atmosphere had changed for the better once the plants had moved in too.

Check out today’s infographic and let some more flora into your life. [Via]
