The Highs and Lows of Cycle Safety

Cycle Safety

Sharing the road with cyclists is a farely new concept to me. I didn’t see much of them growing up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but once I moved to a more bicycle friendly city for college, my eyes were open. A lot of my friends had bikes, a lot of my professors had bikes, that’s just how things go in Central Texas. But it wasn’t always so great being on bike. I’ve heard the horror stories of what can go wrong when people in control of motor vehicles aren’t as safe as the bicyclist.

According to the infographic, 80% of accidents occur in broad daylight and most are hit and runs. My mom would always say “I trust you, but not the people around you” whenever it was time for me to borrow the car and I think that’s the perfect mindset to have when you frequently ride your bike. The infographic also gives a few pointers on how to increase your level of safety when riding, which include wearing a helmet, lights, and reflectors.

Aside from the possible dangers that could stem from riding your bike, there are tremendous health effects. It’s a great way to burn calories and get back into the shape you desire. It can also help reduce the size of your carbon footprint. Take some time to read over this infographic. Maybe you’ll discover you were a bike person and didn’t even know it! [Via]
